An Institution established by Rev. Thomas Huges in 1802. The academy was created as a "prep" school for college. Classes included languages, philosophy, and astronomy. The stone structure was built around 1806, making it one of the oldest buildings still standing in Beaver County.

An American soldier and physician who served as a colonel and brigade commander in the Union Army during the Civil War. He attended Greersburg Academy in Darlington from 1838 to 1840. After, he spent time in medical school in Pittsburgh.
 
ORDINANCES FROM DARLINGTON

Ordinance #279

An ordinance amending Section 5 and Section 14 of Ordinance No. 262 of the Borough of Darlington being an Ordinance regulating the construction and repairing the curbs, gutters and sidewalks in the Borough of Darlington and prescribing penalties for the violation thereof.

Be it enacted and ordained by the Town Council of the Borough of Darlington and it is hereby enacted by authority of the same as follows:

Sec. 1.  That Section 5 of Ordinance No. 262 be amended so as to read as follows:

  1. It shall be unlawful to proceed with the construction or repair of any curb or sidewalk, without first securing from Borough Council the proper grade, which said grade shall be given without charge, one time only.

 

Sec. 2.  That Section 14 of Ordinance No. 262 be amended so as to read as follows:

  1. From and after the passage of this Ordinance it shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation whether owner or contractor, to replace, repair or rebuild any existing sidewalks or curbs without placing said sidewalks or curbs to grade and the same must be constructed of concrete as called for above.

 

  1. In case of replacing or new construction of sidewalks, curbs must be placed prior to the construction of said sidewalks unless otherwise authorized by council.

Sec. 3.  All other provisions of said Ordinance No. 262 are hereby reenacted and reaffirmed.
Ordained or enacted into an ordinance by the Town Council of the Borough of Darlington this 6th day of December, 1957.
